Brazen Head: Irish Pub

319 S. 78th Street, Omaha, NE

Where we went:

It had been a cool and rainy few days in Omaha, so tonight we really just wanted some comfort food to make us feel better. Eric suggested Brazen Head, an Irish Pub.

What we Eat:

The food at Brazen Head is very traditional Irish fare, perfect comfort food. Kyle had the fish and chips, while Eric went for the Dubb Linn Stew in a bread bowl with chips. The drink menu is fairly extensive, being an Irish pub and all. Eric decided to go with a Stiff Shillelagh, a mix of Jameson whiskey and ginger ale. At the end of the meal we shared a traditional Irish dessert (though I think it's actually has English origins), the Bread Pudding.

The Food:

The fish and chips were very traditional, however the fish was huge! They have the option for two or three slabs of fish, Kyle had just two and glad he did, he couldn’t have eaten a third. The waffle fries or “chips” are also excellent. Eric’s Dubb Linn Stew was hearty and savory. The meat and vegetables were tender with flavorful broth, and all this was inside a delicious toasted sourdough bread bowl. The stew is everything you could ask for in comfort food.

The meal was wrapped up with the delicious bread pudding. Kyle has never been a big fan of Bread Pudding, but Eric thought it was excellent. Contrary to what you may think, it’s not literally a pudding like we normally think of. It’s more like a very saucy, moist baked dessert. It’s hard to describe, but the closest Eric can think of is a very messy cinnamon roll like dessert. The texture can be off putting to some people (like Kyle), but Eric loves this traditional British dessert.

Also, neither Kyle nor Eric had it this visit, but another of their best known meals is called the Boxty, an Irish potato pancake with vegetables and sauce. If you have never had it before, Kyle heartily suggests you try it.

The Atmosphere:

Brazen Head has the most unique atmosphere of anywhere we have eaten so far. The dark wood table, chairs, and floors, frosted glass room dividers, and inlaid wooden ceilings, really makes you feel like you are in an old school Irish pub. The walls of Brazen head are covered in everything Irish, our table alone was surrounded by an ad for Guinness, newspaper articles from Ireland, and other very Irish antiques and collectables. Brazen Head also features a stage in the back to provide live music to as you dine, though neither Kyle nor Eric have been to Brazen Head while a band was playing. Brazen Head also features a room for large private parties.

The Service:

The Service at Brazen Head usually very good. Tonight our waiter, though very nice, seemed a little distracted, this is a small nit pic, for example, he brought us our check and almost walked away before we got the chance to ask for a desert menu.

In the End:

Brazen Head is a perfect spot to come unwind after a stressful day. From the delicious comfort food to variety of drinks and relaxed, old timey atmosphere, it’s like taking a break from the rest of the world for a little while.
