Lighthouse Pizza and Fries
1004 S 71st Plaza, Omaha, NE
Where we went:
We actually weren’t going to make Lighthouse Pizza our second stop on this food tour, but when we discovered they were raising money for a local theater organization we knew we had to go. Lighthouse Pizza and Fries is relatively new establishment in Omaha that both Eric and Kyle have frequented. The extra large pizza slices and specialty fries, something you wouldn’t normally get together, have made this location, that also features a drive through window, a standout in Omaha.
What we Eat:
Eric got his standard order, building his own pizza with honey wheat crust, red sauces, hamburger, pepperoni, red peppers and cream cheese. Kyle, one the other hand, decided to steer away from his regular order and also built his own pizza too, going with the traditional crust, hamburger, sausage, mushrooms and spinach. On a normal evening we would also get a set of fries, but tonight we had decided in advance to go next door after we eat to treat ourselves to some Eileen’s Cookies, unfortunately for us, Eileen’s was closed by the time we got there, so no bonus desert blog tonight.
The Food:
The food at Lighthouse is excellent, large pizza slices with loads of toppings really hits the spot. The fries, though we didn’t have any this visit, are also usually fresh and hot. Both the frise and pizza are served with a special sauces that Eric loves, however, Kyle doesn't care for it. We discussed what we thought was actually in the sauce, but couldn’t come up with an answer.
The Atmosphere:
Despite being located in a suburban strip mall, the atmosphere in Lighthouse is very hip and trendy, with exposed lamps and both table and bar heights setting and TV’s showing local programming. The one hiculp to a visit is the way the menu is situated. It is above and in front of the counter, so if you need to look at the menu while ordering, which of course you do, you actually have to take a step back from the counter, which, when the restaurant is busy, makes it hard for the cashere to hear what you are ordering.
The Service:
Because this isn’t a traditional, sit down and someone will wait on you, type of restaurant, the service varies based on who is at the counter. In all the times we have been there we have never had bad service, but we also haven’t had service that exceptionally stood out to us. Although you order at the counter, your food is brought out to you, which is nice, so you don’t have people shouting names or numbers while you are trying to have a conversation.
In the End:
Lighthouse pizza is an exceptional pizza spot in Omaha, and combining that with the fires also makes it a unique one. Eric’s coworkers absolutely love lighthouse pizza, so much so they regularly order it for lunch, even though they don’t work anywhere near Lighthouse and they don’t deliver.
Lighthouse is here to stay in Omaha and we will be back many times in the future.
