Mama’s Pizza

Where we went:

Tonight felt like a pizza kind of night. Eric has been to Mama’s Pizza many times, but Kyle had never been there, so it was the perfect location.

What we Eat:

At Mama’s you order at the bar, then find a table. A server will then bring the food to you. Kyle wasn’t sure what he wanted, so we decided to do a half and half pizza. Half Hamburger, half Mama’s Combo. We each had a soda, while Eric also purchased a chocolate covered rice crispy treat. The treat was for desert, but it looked so good, Eric decided to have it as an appetizer.

The Food:

The pizza at Mama’s was excellent. It came out nice and hot, we had to wait several minutes for it to cool down. There were also a lot of toppings on the pizza, especially the Mama’s Combo half which was almost overflowing.

Mama’s pizza cuts their pizzas into squares. This might not matter to most people, but Kyle has never understood the reason for that at any pizza place. Maybe it's to feed more people off one pizza, but he would still prefer traditional triangle slices. This doesn’t, of course, change the taste of the pizza, it’s just something Kyle noticed. Eric agrees that there can be a slight inconvenience due to the difficulty of eating the inner slices by hand (there’s no crust to hold on to), but no matter how it’s cut, or if you have to use a fork, it still tastes delicious to him!

Eric also always makes a point to get his chocolate covered rice crispy treat every time he goes. It’s such a simple dessert, but he almost never finds it!

The Atmosphere:

Mama’s is a very large, open restaurant that is divided into two seating areas, and an arcade. The seating areas are less like a restaurant and more like a cafeteria. All the tables are set up in long lines, with a few tables, like ours, set apart. It looks like a great place to bring large groups of people, but for Kyle anyway, it felt a little odd for small group dining.

Most of the times Eric has been to Mama’s has been with casts of the various theater productions he has been in over the years, further reinforcing Kyle’s theory that it is more of a group dining venue.

There isn’t any decoration or Italian theme at Mama’s to give you the feel of a pizzeria, so the atmosphere comes off as bland and simple. The numerous TVs set up around the dining area give it more of a sports bar feel, especially since they were all showing sports games. Eric, however, we delighted to see that place was decorated for Halloween!

The Service:

The service at Mama’s is primarily when you order and when the food is delivered. Waiters don’t walk around the restaurant refilling your drinks, you have to go back up to the bar to get refills. There really isn’t anything wrong with that, it’s just how this restaurant is set up. But it’s a little different than most places, and really doesn’t give much interaction with staff to really judge the service on.

In the End:

Mama’s is an excellent place for Pizza. They also have other items on their menu that we will need to try next time we go. We discovered that, though Mama’s on Saddle Creek is the flagship location, there are actually two other locations around Omaha. 15615 Pacific Street and 8146 S. 96th Street.

The only issue with the Mama’s on Saddle Creek is getting in and out of the parking lot. Saddle Creek is a windy, multi lane road that snakes through midtown Omaha. This means it is very busy. Mama’s is built right up along the street. There is a little parking in front and more parking along the sides. We had a hard time getting out of the lot due to traffic and a lane being closed for construction.
