Pizzeria Davlo
14220 Fort Street, Omaha, NE
Where we went:
Eric was hungry for pizza, but not just any pizza, for a good Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza. He remembered a place he had been to over a year ago, Pizzeria Davlo. Pizzeria Davlo is a small, family owned Chicago Deep Dish Pizza in northwest Omaha. The location seemed very odd to Kyle, as there really isn’t much out that far northwest, but he was willing to give it a try anyway.
What we Eat:
Eric started out with a Crown Float, a Kahlua and Crown Royal drink with Cream and Root Beer. Then together we ordered a large “House” pizza. The “House” comes with Sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, onion and red pepper. Eric however, wanted to substitute the sausage with ground beef. Kyle pointed out that the menu specifically says “No Substitutions”.
While deciding on what other pizza we wanted instead, the waitress came over to take our order. Eric mentioned our dilemma, lucky he did! Our waitress said that the “No Substitutions” is meant to prevent people from substituting multiple items on a pizza, because if they did, the should really just build their own pizza, which is also an option. But if we just wanted to substitute just one item for another we could. So we got the “House” with hamburger instead of sausage.
She then informed us that it would be about 35-45 minutes before we could get out pizza, and asked if we wanted an appetizer to tide us over. We didn’t realize it would take that long, and had decided against an appetizer already, but chose to go for one instead because we were both so hungry. We got the Bruschetta, because it seemed like a nice light appetizer that wouldn’t fill us up too much.
The Food:
Eric’s Crown Float was really good. It actually tasted similar to the special Milky Way Italian Soda from Spaghetti Works a few weeks earlier, but this one was boozy! It was just as delicious! The Bruschetta was everything we wanted in an appetizer. Kyle isn’t used to fresh mozzarella. He’s accustomed to just eating melted shredded mozzarella, so when huge slices of fresh mozzarella came out, he was in awe of how delicious and different they were from what he was used to. The tomato topping was good and very juicy, so much so that it kept dripping out of the bread. Eric wished for a stronger balsamic flavor, but it was still good.
Then, the pizza came . . . OMG SO GOOD! This is real Chicago-style pizza, right here in Omaha. It perfectly imitates famous Chicago places like Pizzeria Uno, and it is the perfect place to tide over pizza lovers until Giordano’s finally opens up its Omaha location. Seriously, though, this pizza was amazing. Old Chicago pales in comparison. This pizza is thick with rich tomato sauce and layers of cheese and toppings. This is definitely a pizza you need to eat with a fork and knife. Kyle and Eric were full after only a couple slices each, but they were more than happy to take the rest home to enjoy it the next day.
The Atmosphere:
The atmosphere at Davlo isn’t anything special. It is located in a strip mall, so it has a standard strip mall restaurant feel. That being said, they have put in the energy to make it feel a little more unique. The bright yellow walls, contrast nicely with the black ceiling and dark wood bar and booths. One entire wall is covered with exposed, untreated wood planks, and there are several pictures and objects adoring in the walls. We didn’t take the time to look at them too closely, but it is possible they were family pictures and heirlooms (though Eric did notice a cool portrait of Edgar Allan Poe!). So all in all, not great, but not cookie cutter either.
The Service:
The staff was very friendly, overall. The bartender was very friendly and quick to greet us as we arrived, and wish us a goodnight as we left. Our server was really nice. She was kind and prompt and was very gracious about letting us make a substitution in our meal. The pizza came out faster than we expected.
In the End:
The only downside to Pizzeria Davlo is its location, but the Chicago style pizza is well worth the long drive all the way out to 144th and Fort Street. The food, drinks and staff are excellent, you won’t be disappointed. We should also note that your leftover pizza re-heats surprisingly well, so you will definitely have lunch for tomorrow!
