Romeo’s Mexican Food and Pizza

2395 N. 90th Street, Omaha, NE

Where we went:

Romeo’s Mexican Food and Pizza is one of our favorite places in Omaha. That is because they have such good Mexican food...AND Pizza! Romeo’s originally opened in the 1970’s specifically as a pizza place that just happened to have some Mexican dishes on the menu as well. But their Mexican food became so popular, they decided to specialize in both. There are four locations around Omaha, we decided to go to the newest location, which is actually located just across from their original flagship location on north 90th street.

What we Eat:

Kyle and Eric both have a hard time deciding what to eat whenever they go to Romeo’s. Everything on the menu is so good, so it’s always hard to make a decision. Eric felt that the best dish to try at a Pizza/Mexican restaurant would be the Taco Pizza to get both sides in one! Kyle chose the La Trio Grande, which came with a Taco, Enchilada and Tamale with rice and beans. On all orders, you can mix and match their three sauces, cheese, red and green sauce. Kyle always choses to get all three sauces on the side, as he likes them all, but wants to be able to add the amount that he feels is right while he is eating. Eric topped his meal off with a large house margarita.

We also chose to have dessert, Eric had been carving their Bunuelo, an ice cream sundae in a crispy flour tortilla shell topped with cinnamon and honey, chocolate or strawberry sauce, and chopped nuts. Eric couldn’t choose between the sauces, so he had them put on all three! Kyle , on the other hand, really wanted their Sopapillas. Romeo’s Sopapillas come also come with three types of sauce, honey, raspberry and chocolate. Kyle got all three also got all three, but again got them on the side.

The Food:

There isn’t much we can say about the food, other then it’s great! We have never had a bad meal at Romeo’s and it is always a pleasure to dine there. Eric’s Taco Pizza was piled high with fresh vegetables, and had a nice spicy taco sauce, and Kyle’s trio was as warm and delicious as always. Kyle had forgotten that Romeo’s Tamale’s were a bit spicier than he normally likes, but that didn’t stop it from still being good. Eric’s margarita was pretty standard. The various fruity types he enjoys at other restaurants weren’t available, but the basic margarita was still good.

The Atmosphere:

Romeo’s atmosphere isn’t anything special. Everything from the walls to the booths have a Tex-Mex feel to it, but nothing that you couldn’t find in any other Tex-Mex restaurant. As a recently opened restaurant, everything had a shiny gloss of newness to it. But the newly opened decorations had a bit of bland sterility to them. Some old timeu black and white photos on the walls were the only thing that really resembled anything southwest. Some of their other locations have more of a comfortable old world authenticity that the new building lacks.

I don’t think they put to much work into their decor, as they do into their food. Normally Romeo’s is a busy place, so the noise and energy adds to the experience, tonight was quiet. Kyle personnel liked their old location just across 90th street, it was smaller but had a bit more flair to it, but the food hasn’t changed, that is what is really important.

The Service:

As always the services was top notch. Because it was a slower night we were seated right away, and got our drinks, food and desert promptly. At Romeo’s Kyle has always had to pay at the register after the meal, but this time the waitress came back around and picked up our payment. Not sure if this is a new thing, or if it was because it was a slower night.

In the End:

Romeo’s is one of the best, if not the most authentic, Mexican food and Pizza restaurant in Omaha. With four locations, they are easy to find, and you will always have a great experience all around. Their TV commercials also have the most catchy jingle to them “Romeo’s Mexican Food and Pizza, Nacho Typical Restaurant!”
