Angus Burgers and Shakes
10177 S. 168th Ave., Omaha, NE
Where we went:
Okay, so this one is cheating a little; despite the address on their website saying that Angus Burgers and Shakes is in Omaha, they are technically located southwest of Omaha in unincorporated Sarpy County. But because this area is technically still part of the Omaha metro area, and there are a number of other restaurants in Sarpy County that we will be eating at, we thought it was fair to include this one.
After a fun pool party, Eric and Kyle joined their friends Rodney and Timothy for dinner. Angus Burgers and Shakes is a relatively new restaurant, with this location in Sarpy County and a second location in Kearney Nebraska. Angus uses all Nebraska Raised, USDA beef, locally grown vegetables and produces their own ketchup, mustard and steak sauce. None of us had been to Angus before, so it was a new experience all around.
What we Eat:
Because this was a new burger place, Kyle went for a classic, “Plain Jane” burger in order to taste the burger itself, while Eric went for a unique burger, the “Santa Vaca” burger which included tempura battered avocado, oregano vinaigrette, chipoltle mayo and pico de gallo. Both had the waffle fries which were recommended by Rodney. Eric topped his meal off with a mint chocolate chip “boozy” shake.
The Food:
The food at Angus was exceptionally good. The burgers were thick and juicy and all the toppings were fresh. Eric felt the spices gave a delicious kick to his burger, he is normal ambivalent about avocado, but the tempura fried ones were particularly delicious. The waffle fries, which Kyle isn’t normally a fan of, were seasoned in such a way that made them unique and excellent. The in hours ketchup was also a hit with everyone. Eric loved his “boozy” shake, it tastes just like mint chocolate chip ice cream. The drink didn’t give him a strong hint of alcohol, which either means the flavor was covering it up, or it wasn’t very strong, regardless Eric loved it.
The Atmosphere:
Despite being located in a suburban strip mall, the Atmosphere at Angus is quite hip. It appears to be designed to bring that trendy vibe you get at bars in the heart of the city out to the suburbs. We sat at a high-top table near the bar where there were many TV’s all set to sports channels. The marquee and old fashioned lights cast a warm, comfortable glow over the dining area. They weren’t too bring, but not too dim.
The Service:
The service was good. Of course we were there near closing time, so there weren’t many other people there. But unlike some places, where the staff just get eager to get you out so they can go home, everyone was perfectly friendly. The cook got Rodney’s food wrong, the waitress noticed it before she even brought it to the table so sent it back right away.
In the End:
Angus burger was very good. The unique, in house ingredients truly made a difference. Unlike most burgers, this one didn’t have the messy grease “oh no it's falling apart” issue at the end like most burgers do. If it wasn’t for the location, way out of our way, we would certainly go back, as it is, we will need a reason to be in Sarpy County, or really have a carving for Angus, to go back, which is very possible. Eric is already craving more of their burgers and shakes, and is considering ordering the same boozy shake again, but this time getting 6 to see if it gets him drunk.
