Goldberg’s Dundee

5008 Dodge Street, Omaha, NE

Where we went:

We had previously agreed that a good burger was going to be in our future, so we decided which of the great burger places on our list we should try tonight. After a lot of thought, we decided to go with a classic Omaha staple we both love but haven’t been to in a long time, Goldberg’s in Dundee. We need to specify this is the location in Dundee, as there is also a Goldberg’s in Millard that is also known for their burgers, but is not associated with Goldberg’s Dundee.

What We Ate:

Eric started off the evening with a Berricello, a sweet and sour, fruity vodka drink. To go with his Berricello, he ordered the Harvarti burger, a burger topped with havarti cheese, mushrooms, onions and red peppers. He got this burger on Goldberg’s signature pretzel bun, and substituted sweet potato fries as his side.

Kyle went with his favorite, the mushroom swiss burger, also on a pretzel bun, but with their potato wedges.

While Goldberg’s Dundee is known for their Bread pudding dessert, which Eric was initially intending to get, two other dessert options caught our eyes: the deep fried cheesecake, and the brownie ala mode.

The Food:

The food at Goldberg’s Dundee is always excellent, and tonight was no exception. Kyle’s burger was nice and juicy, but he feels that the burgers were not as thick as they have been in the past. This could be a change in how much meat they give you, or it could just be Kyle misremembering his previous visits. Despite this, he still loved his burgers and the fresh vegetables they came with. Kyle is not a fan of kettle chips, as to him they are basically potato chips, so he has no problem paying a little more for their potato wedges, which are delicious.

Eric’s burger was delicious, as usual. He tends to get the Havarti burger more often than not when he comes to Goldberg’s because, as you may have guessed, he REALLY has a thing for red peppers, and he honestly can’t think of anywhere else in town where red peppers are even an option for a burger topping. Also, Eric is pretty picky about cheese on his burgers, and Havarti is one of the few that he enjoys (American makes him gag). The burger was just as juicy as Kyle’s, and while he shares the sentiment that it may be slightly smaller than expected, it’s still a decent portion to not overwhelm his stomach, leaving him plenty of room for . . .

The desert, oh man the desert! The fried cheesecake was the unique item, and it was really good. The fried coconut shell around it may turn away those crazy folks who don’t care for coconut, but the inside is some really good cheesecake all on its own. The caramel sauce adds a nice touch, and while ice cream is delicious, it almost seems like too much with the cheesecake. It just doesn’t compliment it as well as . . .

The brownie . . . oh my god, SO GOOD. The chocolateyness of this brownie was perfect. The soft, warm middle was perfect. It was one of the best brownie desserts in town. We can’t say enough good things about this brownie!

The Atmosphere:

Goldberg’s has a unique atmosphere to it. Despite the large south facing windows, it is quite a dark restaurant, most of the interior wood being painted a deep maroon color. It is also hard to tell exactly how large the restaurant actually is. Many of the walls are covered by mirrors, while square lattice work divides different parts of the restaurants where the booths sit in the middle. All in all, this has a good effect, making each meal feel very intimate, this is accentuated by the high backed booths, giving dinners quite a bit of privacy at each booth. Each table also has an image of a historic Omaha location. At our table, we had a picture of the home that was used as the first location of the Dundee Methodist Church at the turn of the century.

Service:

The service at Goldberg’s Dundee was good. We have never had bad service at Goldberg’s, but we also haven’t had exceptional service. The wait staff are nice, the food comes out fast and hot, and our drinks were always full. But there was nothing that made the service stand out to us.

In the End:

In the end we highly recommend Goldberg’s Dundee. While we focused on their burgers, they also have a variety of steaks and other sandwiches available. The location, at 50th and Dodge in the historic Dundee neighborhood, is perfect, just west of bustling Midtown Crossing, and just east of the busy Crossroads (72nd and Dodge). The only issue one might face is parking. Goldberg’s Dundee has the main entrance off Dodge street, but a smaller entrance facing a parking lot in the back, that is accessed via Capitol Ave. The parking lot is a little small. In fact, we managed to get the last open spot in the lot when we arrived. This should, in no way, be a deal breaker for visiting Goldberg’s, just something to keep in mind, that you might need to find street parking.
