Farmhouse Cafe & Bakery

3461 S. 84th Street, Omaha, NE

Where we went:

Eric felt like comfort food tonight, and there is no better place that Kyle and Eric can think of for comfort food than the Farmhouse Cafe & Bakery.

What we Eat:

Both Kyle and Eric usually always get breakfast when they eat at Farmhouse. For Kyle, tonight was no exception. Kyle got the Gardener's Dream Omelet, a three egg omelet with fresh vegetables and monterrey jack cheese, slathered in creamed spinach. The omelet came with potato wedges and a pancake. Eric, however, wanted to try something new. He went with the Chicken Pot Pie. Our friend decided to try the three piece Honey Fried Chicken.

We were all hungry for dessert tonight, and Eric had a special craving for chocolate cake. Kyle went with the more classic sour cream chocolate cake, while Eric chose the more exotic turtle chocolate cake, our friend went with the Boston cream pie.

The Food:

Kyle’s omelet and pancake was as good as ever (Eric lists Farmhouse pancakes as his favorite in all of Omaha!). He had never had the potato wedges before, they were a little larger than he expected, but they were still very tasty. He thinks he was getting the potatoes wedges at Farmhouse mixed up with those at another restaurant. Eric is a huge fan of Chicken Pot Pies in general, and Farmhouse did not disappoint. The portion size was perfect. The pie crust was delicious with just the right amount of flakey. The inside of the pie was piping hot, like all good chicken pot pies, but it thankfully hadn’t reached molten lava temperatures yet and only required a brief bit of cooling before Eric could dig in without blistering his tongue. The chicken inside was tender, and the vegetables were flavorful. Eric wished for a tad more of the gravy inside as it was a bit dry, but overall it was very very good.

Eric tried a bit of the Honey Fried Chicken and was surprised by how much he enjoyed it. He thinks he’ll have to come back and order it for himself to give a better accounting of its deliciousness.

We were surprised both the cakes. Kyle originally wanted the turtle chocolate cake, but was afraid it was going to be too rich, so Eric ordered it instead. However, the sour cream chocolate cake turned out to be far richer than the turtle one, probably due to the generous amounts of chocolate frosting. Eric felt that turtle cake left a bit to be desired. The caramel drizzle was used more sparingly than he had hoped, and Eric thought that the cake was surprisingly dry. It definitely seemed like the cake had been sitting in the display case all day before he got his slice. Eric also insisted on trying a bite of everyone else’s desserts. The slight dryness seemed to be a recurring theme across the cake slices, but he feels the extra frosting and such on the sour cream chocolate and boston cream cakes went a long way to alleviate some of the dryness.

The Atmosphere:

Farmhouse cafe and bakery sure tries to live up to its name. The outside of the restaurant is painted red to look like something you would find on a farm. When you walk in you are immediately inside a world class bakery, but the farm theme doesn’t end, with wooden signs and even a giant plastic rooster to greet you.

The “Farmhouse” decor continues on into the dining room. Large wooden rafters, and wall hangings that evoke a country, barnyard feel, can be found throughout.

The atmosphere took a bit of a turn when a special guest paid us a visit. Santa Claus, who was on break from meeting kids at Mangelsen's’ next door, came into farmhouse, stopping at each table to wish us a merry Christmas (even thought it was still November).

The Service:

The service was fine, nothing that stood out to us. They close at nine on weeknights, so you could tell the wait staff were starting to wrap up their day while we were there. But our waitress was friendly and efficient, so we have nothing bad to say about her.

In the End:

Farmhouse is one of our favorite places in Omaha for comfort food and dessert. The food is always fresh and warm, and the bakery is always pumping out the most delicious treats you can imagine.

Farmhouse is connected, and is a partner with Mangelsen's, an extremely large, family owned, gift and craft store. Staff at Farmhouse encourage guests to roam around Mangelsen's while they wait for their table, which is a fantastic way to pass the time on weekends when the brunch crowd can be overwhelming. They will announce party names over Mangelsen's speakers when their table is ready. Kyle and Eric have come to Mangelsen's many times to pick up unique items (for example a balloon in the shape of a cactus) that you can’t just find anywhere.
