Jimi D’s Food and Spirits
6303 Center Street, Omaha, NE
Where we went:
Today we had plans to go see a movie, well technically a documentary, Won’t you be my Neighbor? This documentary, about the life of everyone’s favorite TV neighbor, Mr. Rogers. We highly recommend seeing it, it is excellent! But this meant, unlike other nights, we only had a limited window to get dinner. The movie was playing at Aksarben Cinema, so we chose to go to on of Kyle’s favorite places in the same area, Jimi D’s Food and Spirits.
What we Eat:
Both Kyle and Eric had eaten here a number of times, this is probably the one restaurant we are both most familiar with. We started off with a appetizer that Eric loves, the Bruschetta. Kyle had the Chicken Parmesan, and Eric went with the Lasagna and washed it down with a Mint Julep. The dinner was topped off with a slice of blueberry cheesecake.
The Food:
The Bruschetta was pretty good. It was a toss up between this and the Caprese salad (Eric loves any combination of tomatoes, mozzarella, and balsamic), but the Bruschetta seemed easier to share. Jimi D’s Bruschetta seemed a bit more watery than Eric was used to due to some particularly juicy tomatoes. It was hard to stop eating it and save room for the main courses.
Kyle loves Chicken Parmesan in general, but the version he finds at Jimi D’s is his favorite. The sauce is a bit sweeter than he’s used to, but when combined with the cheese, and the seasonings used in the chicken and it all just . . . Mmmmm.
Eric went with their house House Lasagna. In contrast to the bruschetta, the lasagna seemed pretty dry inside. This was more than made up for with the extra sauce surrounding the dish, some delicious seasoning used on the meat, and the generous amount of cheese baked on top. Eric’s Mint Julep was just what Eric was looking for. The mint was very refreshing. It’s not a common drink to find in the Omaha area. The cheesecake was . . . perfect. As mentioned in an earlier post, blueberries don’t usually excite Eric. But, once again, Eric’s palate was turned around with another spectacular blueberry dessert. The cheesecake itself was amazing, and the blueberries were the perfect amount of sweetness to go on top.
The Atmosphere:
Jimi D’s rides a fine line between fancy and casual. The deep red curtains and cherry wooden chairs and tables give it a warmth that’s enhanced by the low lamps throughout the dining area. The artwork on the walls is all local and changed out regularly, so there’s always something new to see there.
The Service:
The service at Jimi D’s was good. There was a large family sitting next to us, but it didn’t seem to bother the waitress at all. She was quick and responsive, and we have no complaints.
In the End:
This post was actually pretty challenging; Kyle and Eric have both been there so often that it was hard to come up with things to say. The location is great with its proximity to the Aksarben area. The price averages a little bit higher than other casual restaurants, but you’ll find that even Jimi D’s more extravagant menu items are still under $20. It’s a great place for a variety of occasions, and they’re always willing to accommodate larger groups. This one will definitely remain a mainstay for Kyle and Eric.
